New memoir "Ashes to Flame" by Donna Simmons is released, a powerful call to action around personal growth, social justice, and breaking cycles of abuse

“Ashes to Flame: Transforming Trauma into Purpose” by Donna Simmons has been released worldwide. This 150-page memoir delves into the author’s painful family history and personal experiences to show that trauma doesn’t have to be a life sentence, and that survivors often have an untapped superpower to transform harrowing experiences into a life of purpose.

By sharing the gut-wrenching reality of her early life, from the hardships endured by her mother and previous generations of women to the devastating effects of being married to a predator at age 16, Simmons sets the stage for an impassioned call for justice. With fearless conviction, the author offers the shocking details of her own journey through trauma, and shows a path toward healing and activism that helps other survivors find purpose in pain.

With a mission to use her story to bring survivors together in a coalition dedicated to systemic, legislative, and cultural change, Simmons inspires readers to dig deeper into the conditions that allow abuse, sexual exploitation, human trafficking, and other horrors to persist. Throughout this honest, mobilizing memoir, there are also frequent affirmations that survivors are not alone, that they are not at fault for what happened to them, and that a hopeful future is possible.

Simmons also examines cycles of generational dysfunction in her own family and across the broader population. She shows the ways that those who hurt others are hurting (or have been hurt) themselves, the ways abusive behavior can be passed from generation to generation, and that understanding these cycles is a critical first step toward acceptance – a catalyst for moving through suffering to build the peace that everyone deserves. This examination reinforces the idea that legislation to protect women and children is necessary to break cycles and create lasting change.

This candid, inspiring, and often heartbreaking memoir goes beyond the details of the author’s life to build a rallying cry for survivors to come together and fight for meaningful change – both in their own healing and the larger social and legal landscape.
