Wonderfilm Pictures announces the launch of the innovative 3-way RED KOMODO-X VFX Array, designed for feature films and TV productions. Created by Wonderfilm’s founder and director, Lewis Andrews, this multi-camera rig offers a practical VFX plate solution available for hire. It can be used for large-scale productions, catering to both ground and aerial VFX drone shoots.
The VFX Array features 3 RED KOMODO-X cameras paired with 3 ZEISS 21mm CP.3 XD lenses, capturing impressive levels of detail. With 6K Super 35mm sensors that deliver 6144 x 3240 pixels, the array provides a 160° field of view, capturing plates up to 80 FPS and offering over 16.5 stops of dynamic range per camera. Each camera has a 65.5° field of view, and the lightweight design is flexible, offering stability for both ground setups and aerial drone use, ensuring compatibility with heavy-lifter drones.
Collaborating with an expert engineer, Lewis developed the VFX Array using RED KOMODO-X cameras and ZEISS 21mm CP.3 XD lenses. Leveraging ZEISS XD eXtended Data technology (XD), the rig ensures seamless image capture and accurate VFX plate composition, with precise lens distortion mapping and stitching. The 3-way RED KOMODO-X VFX Array offers lens distortion and shading data for accurate compositing, making it perfect for real-time, high-resolution data capture. With an approximate 25° field of view overlap between each camera, the setup produces a resolution of approximately 18432 x 3240 pixels. Additionally, Wonderfilm Pictures provides VFX kit rentals, including Teradek’s Bolt 6 LT (TX/RX), MDR.S, and CTRL.5 controller, enabling wireless monitoring and control from up to 1500 feet.
Lewis Andrews has built an extensive network of VFX Supervisors, Producers, Vendors, and Artists. He has served as Lead VFX Data Wrangler on major projects like Blade Runner 2099, Gran Turismo, and Walking with Dinosaurs, and has worked on set VFX for shows like The 3-Body Problem, Damsel, Avenue 5 (Season 2), Scoop, and Citadel. Lewis has had VFX Supervisor responsibilities on Netflix and Amazon shows. He has worked as a VFX Coordinator on shows such as The Man Who Fell to Earth (TV Series 2022).
In addition, Lewis has collaborated with aerial drone company XM2 on blockbuster films like Fast & Furious 9, James Bond: No Time to Die, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Secret Invasion (Marvel), and Cinderella.
