1. When you’re buying for personal use, make sure to measure the opening of your glass jar so you can get the right size rubber seal. If you’re buying online, check the seller’s size information and return policy.

2. It’s best to choose food-grade silicone or natural rubber materials and avoid products that contain harmful substances like BPA.

What are jars with rubber seals called?

Jars with rubber seals are often called airtight jars, canning jars, preserving jars, or storage jars with rubber gaskets. Here are some common types:

Mason jars : These are widely used for canning and preserving fruits, vegetables, and other food items. The rubber seal helps create an airtight environment to keep the food fresh for a longer time.

Canning jars: Similar to mason jars, canning jars are specifically designed for the canning process. They come in different sizes and shapes and the rubber seals ensure a proper seal during the canning process.

Preserving jars : These jars are used for preserving jams, jellies, pickles, and other food products. The rubber seals help maintain the quality and flavor of the preserved food.

Storage jars : They are used for storing a variety of items such as dry food, spices, coffee, tea, and more. The rubber seals prevent air and moisture from entering the jar, keeping the contents fresh and protected.

How do you measure a jar seal?

1. Measuring the Seal Itself

Inner Diameter (ID)

Tools: Vernier caliper (most accurate) or flexible measuring tape/string.

Method:

Lay the seal flat in a circular shape. Measure the distance between the inner edges of the seal (i.e., the diameter of the inner circle).

If using a string: Wrap it around the inner edge, measure the length, and divide by π (~3.14) to approximate the ID.

Cross-Sectional Diameter (CS)

Tools: Vernier caliper or ruler.

Method:

Measure the thickness of the seal’s cross-section (diameter for round seals or side length for square/rectangular seals).

For flat seals, measure both width and thickness.

2. Measuring the Jar’s Opening

Jar Opening Diameter

Tools: Caliper or measuring tape.

Method:

Measure the diameter of the groove below the jar’s threads (where the seal sits). Focus on the inner edge of the groove.

Groove Depth

Tools: Ruler or depth gauge.

Method:

Place a ruler vertically into the groove and measure the depth from the groove’s base to the jar’s rim. Ensure the seal’s thickness does not exceed this depth.

How do you know if a jar seal is broken?

Visual Inspection

  • Check the Lid : A bulging lid can indicate gas formation resulting from bacteria or yeast growth, which leads to spoilage. If the lid is concave (curving inward), it’s usually a good sign of a proper seal. You can hold the jar at eye level and look across the lid. If the center of the lid is either flat or bulging, it may not be sealed.
  • Look for Leaks or Rust : Any signs of leaks or rust on the lid can also indicate that the seal is broken.

Finger Test

  • Press the Center of the Lid : Gently press down in the center of the lid. If it pops back up, the seal is likely broken. If it stays down, the jar is sealed properly. A vacuum sealed jar will not have a lid that can move or spring up.

Tapping Method

  • Tap the Lid with a Spoon : Tap the jar lid with the bottom of a teaspoon. If it makes a dull sound, the lid is not sealed. If food is in contact with the underside of the lid, it will also cause a dull sound. The sound will be high – pitched if the jar is sealed correctly.

Float Test

  • Fill a Bowl with Water : Fill a bowl with water and place your jar upside down in the water. If it’s sealed, it will float. If it’s not, it will sink.

Smell and Taste Test

  • Smell Test : If you notice an off odor or a sour smell when you open the jar, it’s best to discard the contents.
  • Taste Test : In situations where the food looks and smells okay but you still have doubts, the best test is a small tasting. If the flavor is off, it’s safer to throw it out.
