How to understand strength, hardness, elasticity, toughness and ductility of steel

November 21 17:32 2024

Strengthm – The material should be able to withstand the force applied in the application scenario without bending, breaking, crumbling or deforming.

Hardness – Harder materials are generally more resistant to scratches, durable and resistant to tears and indentations.

Flexibility – The ability of a material to absorb force, bend in different directions and return to its original state.

Formability – Ease of molding into permanent shapes

Ductility – The ability to be deformed by a force in the length direction. Rubber bands have good elasticity. Material wise thermoplastic elastomers generally have good ductility.

Tensile strength – The ability to deform before breaking or snapping.

Ductility – The ability of a material to change shape in all directions before cracking occurs, which is a test of the material’s ability to re-plasticize.

Toughness – The ability of a material to withstand a sudden impact without breaking or shattering.

Conductivity – Under normal circumstances, good electrical conductivity of the material thermal conductivity is also good.
