Chicago, IL – April 15, 2025 – The Protege Project, a transformative youth workforce initiative focused on mentorship, career development, and paid work-based learning, has been awarded an $896,943 grant through the Illinois Department of Human Services’ Illinois Youth Investment Program (IYIP).

Through it’s Rise Above Career Program, this funding will allow The Protege Project to serve 60 youth ages 16 to 24 across Chicago who youth are currently disconnected from school or work. The program provides job training, individualized career coaching, and access to meaningful employment pathways in high-demand industries.

“This investment is a game-changer for the young people we serve,” said Kewana Reese, Founder of The Protege Project. “We’re grateful to IDHS and the IYIP program for believing in our mission. These funds will help us not only provide jobs but also build confidence, self-sufficiency, and brighter futures for youth who deserve every opportunity to succeed.”

The Illinois Youth Investment Program (IYIP) funds community-based organizations across the state to deliver career-focused services to vulnerable youth. The Protege Project was selected for its proven approach to reducing barriers to employment and supporting long-term economic mobility through holistic, youth-centered programming.

The Protege Project’s IYIP program will partner with local employers including State Farm, Watta Potato, Affluent Consulting Group, and community stakeholders to provide hands-on training, financial literacy, wellness support, and real-world work experience. Youth will complete a structured program that prepares them for permanent employment or postsecondary education, setting them on a path toward economic independence.
