April 9, 2025 – The Sorghum United Foundation, in collaboration with Bollywood star Bhagyashree, is shining a spotlight on the importance of sorghum and millets in global food systems. In a compelling interview, Bhagyashree spoke with agricultural advocate Nate Blum about the need to promote these nutritious, water-conserving grains.

Bringing Millets and Sorghum Back to the Table

Despite their superior nutritional value, millets and sorghum are often overlooked in favor of staple grains such as rice. Nate Blum emphasized that all grains have a place on the plate, but consumers need to be reintroduced to these resilient crops. “We are trying to bring these grains back to consumers. They are hard grains that conserve water, making them economical, sustainable, and capable of thriving in arid and rocky regions,” Blum said.

Blum further explained the significance of millet in combating climate change. “In many parts of the world, people rely on staple crops, but with shifting climates, millets are becoming essential for food security.” India, with its rich history of millet consumption, has long recognized its benefits, whereas in the U.S., corn remains a dominant grain despite being difficult to digest.

Overcoming Consumer and Industry Barriers

A major hurdle in the growth of the millet and sorghum market is the lack of awareness among consumers and manufacturers. “If consumers don’t know these products exist, there can’t be growth,” Blum stated. Bhagyashree echoed this sentiment, noting that millets are highly nutritious and beneficial for gut health. “Most people don’t realize that soaking millets makes them easier to digest. They can be used in a variety of ways, including making biscuits and bread,” she said.

Blum emphasized that cooking sorghum and millets is not complicated. “They can be prepared just like rice,” he said, making them accessible to consumers unfamiliar with these grains.

Health Benefits and Scientific Support

Scientific research increasingly supports the health benefits of sorghum and millets. “In the last few years, over 200 studies have been published worldwide highlighting their positive effects on gut microbiomes, heart health, and diabetes management,” Blum explained. Bhagyashree added that sorghum has alkaline properties, which aid digestion and help combat acid reflux.

Education and Innovation for Awareness

Sorghum United is not only advocating for greater millet and sorghum consumption but is also working to educate the public through various initiatives. “Food can be medicine,” Blum stated. “Sorghum United is dedicated to fostering the free exchange of ideas while also developing the market through our Sorgho Squad book series, which has received positive reviews from educators.” The foundation has already published the first three books in the series, which are available on SorghumSquad.com and Amazon.

Additionally, Sorghum United is developing a gaming app to further engage young audiences and spread awareness about these valuable grains.

Bhagyashree applauded these initiatives, calling them “key to raising awareness” and “a great step forward in promoting food security and sustainability.”
