Sustainable Impact Makers International (SIMI) commends the Government of Ghana for recognizing the importance of menstrual health by considering providing sanitary pads to students in its most recent budget. This initiative marks a significant step towards improving girls’ well-being and educational outcomes across the country.
During the 2024 Budget Presentation, Finance Minister Ato Forson emphasized the need to support girls’ education through adequate menstrual hygiene resources, stating, He further noted that the government has made accommodations for sanitary products in the budget, allocating GH₵ 292.4 million (approximately $23.68 million USD) towards ensuring accessibility for students. “Ensuring that young girls have access to basic hygiene products is a fundamental step in removing barriers to education and promoting gender equity.”
SIMI acknowledges and celebrates this commitment while advocating for the sustainable implementation of such programs. These initiatives directly enhance the quality of life for Ghanaian youth, especially girls, by fostering dignity, reducing school absenteeism, and empowering future generations.
While this budgetary consideration is commendable, SIMI urges the government and stakeholders to explore additional funding mechanisms through partnerships with global and local organizations. To ensure equitable access and long-term sustainability, a data-driven approach should be employed to assess the impact of this program, particularly in underserved regions outside of Accra.
We call on development partners, non-governmental organizations, and corporate entities to collaborate in supporting menstrual hygiene programs in Ghana that prioritize girls’ health, education, and empowerment. By ensuring accountability and expanding reach, we can collectively create lasting change that uplifts entire communities.
