March 6, 2025 – As Women’s History Month begins, hip-hop artist Absoloot and producer Kai TooTall Turner are making a bold statement with their new album, Power to the People. This eight-track project pays tribute to Black women who have shaped history, including Mary McLeod Bethune, Harriet Tubman, Ida B. Wells, and countless others whose stories deserve recognition.
The album’s release date carries deep historical significance. On February 24, 1864, Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the first Black woman in the U.S. to earn a medical degree. Nearly a century later, on February 24, 1956, lawmakers launched “Massive Resistance” to prevent Black students from attending desegregated schools. This contrast—Black achievement met with systemic resistance—reflects the themes Absoloot and Kai TooTall Turner explore throughout the album.
A standout track, “Queen Mary”, highlights Mary McLeod Bethune’s contributions to education and her role in helping Carter G. Woodson establish what is now Black History Month. The song serves as a powerful reminder that Black women have always been at the forefront of the fight for justice.
“Black women are the foundation of our history and movements, and they are my greatest influence,” says Absoloot.
The album also features “Fred Hampton,” which examines the assassination of the Black Panther leader, and “Jim Crow (Willie Lynch),” which connects the past to the present-day fight against systemic oppression.
Beyond the music, Absoloot and Kai TooTall Turner are using their platform to support Black-owned businesses. Both artists are wearing Carrots, a Black-owned streetwear brand now sold at Walmart at an accessible price point, and Absoloot is rocking SIA Collective, a Black-owned sneaker brand revolutionizing footwear.
Power to the People will be available on all streaming platforms on February 24th, 2025.
