The 15-week course was developed by real-life attorneys who run a successful litigation practice and who have been teaching, hiring, and training paralegals for years. Drawing on years of feedback from paralegal students, full-time paralegals, attorneys, and others in the legal field, they have formulated this perfectly balanced curriculum that combines the most relevant legal topics with the most practical skills necessary in actual law firms. The paralegal certification curriculum consists of two courses taught concurrently over 15 weeks: The Practicum and The Law.

The Practicum teaches the ‘how’ of working as a paralegal. It meets once weekly for three hours and covers the practical aspects of being a paralegal. All training is done in a legal case assigned to the paralegal. The Practicum course will teach three broad categories of skills: writing skills, legal skills, and law practice skills. Learning writing skills starts on Day One and focuses on teaching students how to write simply and persuasively. Some topics include legalese and why to avoid it, writing from the defendant’s perspective, and the basics of page layout.
The Legal Skills coursework shows students how to use the tools of the trade. An introduction to the legal system includes legal vocabulary, legal research, case law, and the litigation process. Resources include Lexis Nexus and Westlaw, the law library, Shepards, and Key Cite. Law Practice Skills teaches students how to create the documents that will be part of paralegal duties in a law firm and understand where they fit into the legal process.
In the Law Course, students will learn the actual law, including statutory, administrative, and common law. They will also be learning the rules that apply to litigation. The course will include the law of torts, contracts, criminal law and procedure, civil procedure, and family law. A tort is a civil wrong against a person or property. Some common torts include fraud, trespass, assaults, defamation, and product defects. Torts impose a legal duty to act in a certain way; contract law is the enforcement of those duties.
The Criminal Law and Procedure section covers the most common constitutional protections, the criminal legal system generally, and criminal procedure. Civil procedure covers the rules that govern how a civil case may be pursued. The curriculum also provides details about Family Law.
