Award-Winning Joy: ‘Lucy and the Lake Monster’ Captures Best Family Film Award at Cannes

Cannes, FRANCE – January 31, 2025 – “Lucy and the Lake Monster,” an indie film about a young girl and her grandfather’s search for the Lake Champlain sea serpent “Champ,” has made waves by winning the Best Family Film award at the Cannes World Film Festival. This is the film’s fourteenth festival award in just four months.

Written and directed by Richard Rossi, and co-written by retired public schoolteacher Kelly Tabor, the film blends adventure and heartfelt family dynamics.

“Though shot in New York, it’s European in its ethos, focusing on the connection between Papa (Richard Rossi) and his granddaughter, Lucy (Emma Pearson),” Juliette Rosseau, festival journalist, said. “Like the neorealist Italian film “The Bicycle Thief,” which was carried by the relationship of a father and son, the connection between Rossi and Pearson carry the movie.”

Both Richard Rossi (Papa) and Emma Pearson (Lucy) received awards for their performances in this adaptation of Tabor and Rossi’s best-selling book, Lucy and the Lake Monster.

“We’re overwhelmed with joy,” said director Rossi. “I was shocked when we received the news. Our team worked tirelessly to bring this story to life, and it’s wonderful to see it resonate with the jury and the audience. It’s a labor of love, and we’re grateful for the recognition.”

“Winning this award brought tears to my eyes,” said co-writer Kelly Tabor. “It’s the power of storytelling. I shared stories from my childhood with my students. I searched for Champ with my Papa Jerry. When Richard suggested we turn this into a children’s film, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.”

The Cannes World Film Festival is one of the most esteemed events in the industry, attracting talent from around the world. The Best Family/Children’s Film award honors exceptional filmmaking that resonates with young audiences.

“We’re proud to have Lucy and the Lake Monster as part of our festival lineup,” said Rosseau. “The film’s themes of friendship, adventure, and environmental stewardship make it a must-see for families. We congratulate the team on this well-deserved win. It’s sure to become a beloved family classic.”

After wrapping up its festival run, the film will be released on DVD and streaming platforms.
