BOOX has rolled out firmware V4.0, introducing a range of enhancements across its ePaper readers and tablets in reading, note-taking, and system performance.

A major update is the reading engine of NeoReader was upgraded to V3, which optimizes the stability and compatibility of the native reading app on BOOX devices. One notable addition to this new engine is the “Customizable Reading Theme” for reflowable documents. Users can adjust the font, spacing, margins, and background color to create a personalized reading theme, which can then be saved and applied to other documents with just one tap.

As BOOX caters to a large base of frequent PDF readers, improvements have also been made to the OCR feature. The updated OCR now runs in the background and allows users to select a specific page range for recognition. Additionally, the OCR window can be minimized to a side-floating icon, letting users continue reading and annotating without interruption.

BOOX’s Notes app has received several new features, with one highly anticipated being the “Note Outline“. Notebooks with multiple pages can now have a table of contents (TOC) on the side. By simply long-pressing a blank area in the note, users can set a page as an outline entry, and sub-outlines can be added via the “Page Manager.” This feature helps organize complex content and enhances navigation efficiency.

Another key feature is “File-to-Notes“. Firmware V4.0 now allows users to create handwritten notes directly from files stored on local storage. This is particularly convenient for users who prefer to work with custom planners, to-do lists, or calendar templates. The feature also supports academic and office workflows, as it allows clickable hyperlinks in imported PDFs, connecting external resources with handwritten notes.

Firmware V4.0 not only improves efficiency but also enhances the visual experience. New graphics, including coordinate systems, brackets, triangles, pyramids, and cubes, are now available in the “Shape” panel. These graphics are adjustable in size, thickness, and color, making them especially useful for math, physics, and creative projects.

For users who often highlight handwritten notes, the marker tool has been optimized. It now sits as a background color under the text, making the text more legible. Canvas resizing becomes more intuitive with the addition of a preview window. Users can easily double the width or height, expand fourfold, or manually adjust margins to change the layout while drawing or writing.

In addition to the major updates, some small yet useful tweaks were made. BOOX now offers multiple ways to quickly start handwriting notes, such as a double-tapping gesture, the “Quick Note” tile in the Control Center, and a floating button on the widget. Note filtering, sorting, and view switching in the NeoReader and Notes apps have also been refined. There is a new “Scrolling Screenshot” feature for users to capture and share long content, such as web pages and blogs.

Firmware V4.0 is already available in BOOX’s new releases, Note Air4 C, Palma 2, and Note Max, and BOOX reminds its users that the new firmware will be released in batches.
