An award-winning author in Florida has published a picture book designed to gently help children understand death and their own feelings of grief after losing a loved one.

Cassie Brooks wrote her new children’s book We Remember after a conversation she had with her own nine-year-old son, Elijah. After talking about how he remembered and missed his grandmother, Gigi, who had died two years earlier, Cassie felt inspired to create a story which could help other children who are dealing with their own feelings of loss.

The heartwarming book aims to encourage children to cherish the memories they have of their loved ones and find positive ways to honor those they have lost. Available now from Amazon and other booksellers, We Remember is the third book in Cassie’s Magick in Me series.

Cassie, who lives in Port Richey, near Tampa, Florida, says: “The story is based on a real conversation I had with my son about how he could remember his grandmother and how he would always carry her in his heart. The characters talk about ways they can remember someone like sharing stories or lighting lanterns.

“In all my books, I try to share everyday magic in a simple and easy to understand way.”

We Remember has been written so it could be read and enjoyed by someone of any religion or faith as it doesn’t use specific terms like heaven. Cassie herself identifies as a Pagan.

The 41-year-old adds: “It deals with the concepts of death in a gentle and sensitive way. The biggest message of the story is about remembering those you have lost and bringing them to life when you share a story about them.

“Dying is a part of life, but many people find it challenging to talk about it with children. All my books are based on real life conversations I’ve had with my son, which I’ve felt can help others.”

The paperback book has been illustrated by Vaishnavi Dukhande and it was important to Cassie that the characters in the book resembled herself and her son, Elijah. Her previous books are Sticks and Stones and I See the Moon and the Moon Sees Me, whichwon The Golden Wizard Book Prize 2023 and the Richard Wright Literary Award for the best Children’s Picture Book Fantasy.

Cassie, who lived in Memphis, Tennessee, before relocating to Florida this year, has also written another book, My True Colors, which she hopes to publish soon. This book will focus on promoting understanding, empathy, and acceptance of the trans and LGBTQ+ community among young readers.

We Remember is available from Amazon and other booksellers now.
