On August 22, 2024, at 3 World Trade Center, a retrospective showcase featuring the works of director Ziyu Gao. The event, titled Facing Oneself, hosted by EliteLink Education highlighted Gao’s powerful short films alongside a live performance, offering an introspective look into the artist’s journey and her exploration of themes such as identity, isolation, and personal transformation. The screening featured Gao’s acclaimed short films, including Everything But, Ways of Talking, and The Ascend, each revealing her distinct narrative style and commitment to representing underrepresented voices on screen. Through her work, Gao captured raw human emotions and moments of vulnerability, establishing herself as a rising figure in the world of independent cinema.
A Director with a Mission: Ziyu Gao’s Artistic Vision
Ziyu Gao’s passion for filmmaking has always stemmed from her belief in the power of collaboration and its impact on people’s lives. As an Asian female director, she aimed to provide representation for marginalized groups and give a voice to those who often felt isolated or unseen. Her films addressed deeply personal yet universally relatable themes, reflecting her desire to challenge societal norms and inspire change through art.
“I created films to empower and support those who feel alone, aiming to provide representation on screen. As an Asian female director, I know too well the feeling of isolation and unreliability,” Gao explained. Her films were not only a reflection of her experiences but also a means to shed light on the emotional and social challenges faced by minorities.
A Journey of Perseverance and Collaboration
Gao’s path to success had been one of determination and resilience. In her personal statement, she recalled the challenges she faced as a student filmmaker, overcoming skepticism and dismissiveness to prove her talent and dedication. Her hard work led to international recognition, including selections at prestigious film festivals and acceptance into the highly competitive USC Cinematic Arts summer intensive program.
Reflecting on her growth as a filmmaker, Gao emphasized the importance of collaboration: “I truly learned the beauty and magic of collaboration in film. How so many people with different visions and experiences could come together to create one tone and one product was incredible.” Her films, created in partnership with diverse teams, exemplified the power of teamwork in bringing artistic visions to life.

• Everything But (Oniros Film Awards® Finalist, Winner at New York Lift-Off Film Festival) followed the emotional journey of Eve as she grappled with grief and loneliness, retreating within herself in search of a new identity. This intimate portrayal of personal struggle and transformation resonated with audiences worldwide.
• Ways of Talking centered on Emma, who recounted the mysterious circumstances surrounding her brother’s death. The film explored themes of grief, memory, and the ecological impact of loss, highlighting the emotional burden that came with unresolved trauma.
• The Ascend (Official Selection at Cut International Short Film Festival) offered a lighter yet suspenseful take on fear, as Sam, a pizza delivery driver, faced a terrifying experience in a seemingly ordinary elevator. With a runtime of just over three minutes, Gao skillfully created tension and suspense, showcasing her versatility as a filmmaker.
