September 16 13:39 2024

In the ever-evolving world of music, certain artists inevitably capture the spotlight. Taylor Swift is one such powerhouse, captivating audiences worldwide. Another prominent name making waves is British singer Raye, who continues to collect numerous awards. However, this year, an artist who has been steadily rising is now reaching new heights of recognition.

Jamaal Mark Anthony Saunders, better known as Jay Shephard. Touted as one of the most exciting artists of the year, Jay is amassing fans from all corners of the globe. His distinctive sound and magnetic energy are turning heads, making even those unfamiliar with his work pause and listen.

While Jay Shephard may be a fresh name to some, he is no stranger to the music scene. In 2021, he was recognized with a Billboard accolade for his contribution to the “Tropical House Cruises to Jamaica 2nd Edition” album. Yet, this year has undeniably taken his career to unprecedented heights.

I decided to sit down with Jay Shepherd to find out about his new music and what the future holds. This is what he had to say.

What age did you first become interested in music, and can you remember the first album you bought? I became interested in music around the age of 6 as far as I can remember. The first album I got was Bone thugs n harmony East1999.

Who would you say has influenced your style of music? Bone Thugs N Harmony And Reggae Artist Gentleman

So, you say that Bob Marley, and Michael Jackson helped to influence your style, what was it about their music attracted you to them? Their Level of Greatness & Influence. I admired their authenticity and ability to capture and relate to their audience.

When did you start to think I would like to become an artist and make a living from music? After I Got Shot and Felt The Presence Of God In My Room one night. After the visitation from God, I knew I would take music seriously.

How would you describe your style of music? My style I would say is a mix between Bone Thugs, & Gentleman as it pertains to melody, cadence and content.

You were born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas, did that influence you as an artist? Yes it influenced me to expand beyond my small country to Pursue My Passion. Artists pursuing a career in music that is not traditional “Bahamian music” sometimes encounter resistant back home. It is very important to me to represent my country on the world stage through music that represents my personal style.

You have had a lot of success, but what would you say has been the biggest success of your career, and when was the first time you thought, you are going to achieve your musical dreams? I think so, I think me not giving up is my biggest achievement thus far. The Night of the visitation was when I knew I would be successful.

In 2013 you landed a distribution deal with SONY Red, how did that come about? That Deal came about after doing a show in Germany. An individual connected to Sony heard about me and I reached out to them after they stated their interest in my music. I made them my manager and they got me the deal shortly thereafter.

You have a new single coming out, can you tell me more about that? The New Single is called Cyan Manage & It’s about turning to God after realizing that I can’t manage without him. The song was produced by Damage Musiq out of Jamaica. It’s been well received by everyone that heard it. I think it’s a powerful song that reminds listeners to depend on God, especially during trying times.

Where can people listen to your latest single? Everywhere Music can Be found & all Streaming Platforms.

What would you say has been the biggest mistake of your career, and which has been your proudest? The Biggest mistake I would say is passing up an opportunity to be a part of YMCMB. My proudest moment I would say is Getting a Billboard Plaque for my involvement on a Big project with other Mainstream artists.

American Idol has helped produced a number of artists, but some well-known artists don’t believe that it gives everyone a platform. What they mean by that is, the show does not encompass all genres. What is your opinion on American Idol? American Idol is a big platform, but it’s played out now. I don’t think it’s as effective as it used to be. There are so many other platforms and new ways that artists can be discovered at this point. I appreciated the show back then and it certainly made a difference in the lives of many however times have changed.

If fans want to see you perform live, when and where can they see you, and do you have plans to do a tour? I have a few Live performance clips and music videos available online but if anyone wants to see a live performance, I have one coming up on Sept 24th in Nassau Bahamas. I am working closely with my management team to finalize tour dates.

A lot of young people who want to become artist are put off by record companies not wanting to hear their music, and give up, what would you say to anyone who want to become an artist? It takes years to become an overnight sensation. Be prepared to put in a lot of time, money and effort. This Line of works isn’t for the impatient quick money minded individuals. It’s something you have to love and not mind being paid to do.

What is next for you in your musical career? Just releasing quality relatable music for the world.
