A Journey Through Time: Reclaiming Maharlika’s True Identity
“Understanding our true identity as a people goes beyond colonial history,” says Palma. “The name Maharlika was inscribed in the sacred archives of the spiritual realm long before it became a meaningful landmark. This spiritual connection serves as a powerful reminder to the Filipino people of their profound heritage.” – Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji
The land bridge was once connected many thousands of years ago, and Negritos were the first migrants who arrived in the archipelago of Maharlika. The book meticulously documents how various civilizations—including Negritos/Aetas, Indonesians, Malays, Chinese, Indians, and Arabs—contributed to the rich tapestry of Filipino identity through their languages, customs, and traditions. Palma delves into the lost spiritual wisdom that guided these early societies, emphasizing the enduring influence of Tantra and other ancient practices that predated colonial rule for thousands of years.
Deo Palma, Author of “Maharlika In Search of Identity”
Let’s jump into the Q&A with Author Deo Palma: The Heart Behind the Book.
Q. What inspired you to write “Maharlika: In Search of Identity,” and what do you hope readers will take away from it?
DEO PALMA: My journey began as a student activist in the early 1980s, where I engaged in political movements that ignited my patriotic spirit. However, I felt an emptiness within these ideologies. It wasn’t until I encountered PROUT (Progressive Utilization Theory), which integrates spirituality into social change, that I discovered the concept of Maharlika. In this book, I aim to provide clarity on Maharlika’s ideals and its practical approach to liberating our nation from the mental chains of neo-colonialism. Our current identity—Filipino—derives from King Philip II of Spain, a ruler unworthy of reverence. I hope this book awakens the nation to reclaim its true, noble identity as Maharlika.
Q. What does “Maharlika” symbolize to you personally?
DEO PALMA: Maharlika stands for Greatness, Nobility, and Freedom—in stark contrast to “Filipino,” which was imposed as a colonial identity associated with subjugation. The term “Maharlika” represents the strength of a people unbroken by colonial rule.
Spain, the Netherlands, Britain, America, and Japan colonized Maharlika.
Q. What challenges did you face in presenting an alternative historical narrative?
DEO PALMA: The greatest challenge is undoing 500 years of psychological conditioning. Many Filipinos have internalized a colonial mindset, making it difficult to accept that their identity has been manipulated. It’s like trying to shift attitudes about littering; people understand the harm, yet still participate in it. Similarly, many struggle to question the inherited identity of “Filipino.”
The ancient Maharlika people were friends with Chinese traders
Q. Why is it crucial for Maharlikans today to view history from a civilizational context?
DEO PALMA: Our history was deliberately cut off from our Southeast Asian roots. Before colonization, we were a thriving civilization influenced by the SriVijaya and Majapahit empires, practicing deep spirituality, moral values, and virtues that earned us respect across the region. This historical erasure keeps us disconnected from our true heritage.
The Arabs established the Sultanate government in Maharlika in ancient times
Q. In what ways do Indigenous, Buddhist, Islamic, and Indic traditions shape the collective identity of Maharlika?
DEO PALMA: Maharlika is not a religion—it is a national identity centered on spirituality. While religions often divide people, spirituality unites them. The Filipino identity has failed to unify the nation, as evidenced by resistance from the Muslim South and Cordillerans in the North, who never considered themselves “Filipino.” However, Maharlika offers an inclusive framework that honors all traditions.
Q. How can Maharlikans begin the process of decolonizing their self-perception?
DEO PALMA: Education. Read this book. Maharlika must be incorporated into the national curriculum, from kindergarten to university, so that future generations can reclaim their true heritage.
Q. How do myths and spiritual beliefs shape the identity of Maharlika?
DEO PALMA: Myths play a vital role in shaping consciousness, especially in early childhood education. This is why our movement has initiated daycare centers across the nation, ensuring that Maharlikan identity is instilled from a young age. The word “Maharlika” also means “Great Creation”—a reflection of our divine origins.
Our ancient connection with the Srivijaya Empire and the Majapahit Empire was forgotten and is to be remembered.
Q. How do spirituality and identity intersect in your book’s message?
DEO PALMA: Identity without spirituality is like a bird with one wing—it cannot fly. Without a strong national identity, people become vulnerable to materialistic exploitation, inferiority complexes, and defeatist psychology. Spirituality provides the backbone needed for self-determination and resilience.
Q. What are the dangers of adhering to a colonial worldview, and how does your book propose a shift?
DEO PALMA: Colonial materialism is at the root of war, corruption, poverty, and environmental destruction. While my book does not advocate hatred toward the West, it urges a balance between material and spiritual values.
Q. How can Maharlika overcome division and build unity?
DEO PALMA: Filipino identity has failed to unify the nation, but Maharlika can because it is founded on spiritual unity rather than imposed colonial labels.
Why This Book Matters Now: “Maharlika: In Search of Identity” is more than just a history book; it is a call to action. It challenges modern Filipinos to rethink their inherited identity and embrace the nobility and greatness of their ancestors.
