Charlotte, NC – Dr. John Won, a highly respected oral and maxillofacial surgeon, recently returned from a humanitarian mission trip to Guatemala, where he and his team provided life-changing medical care to underserved communities. Over the course of a week, the mission group treated more than 1,000 patients, with Dr. Won personally performing approximately 150 oral surgeries.
The trip, organized through a church-based medical outreach program, focused on delivering essential dental and surgical care to individuals who lack access to routine healthcare. From complex tooth extractions to emergency procedures, Dr. John Won and his team worked tirelessly to alleviate pain and restore oral health for those in need.
“It’s always an incredibly humbling experience to serve communities that have little to no access to medical care,” said Dr. John Won. “Seeing the immediate impact of these procedures—relieving pain, preventing infections, and improving quality of life—reminds me why I became a surgeon in the first place.”
The mission team, a dedicated group of healthcare professionals and volunteers, embarked on a transformative journey to rural Guatemala, where access to basic medical and dental care is often nonexistent. Setting up temporary clinics in remote villages, the team worked tirelessly to address the urgent healthcare needs of communities that have long been neglected.
In these rural areas, many families live in poverty, with limited access to clean water, nutritious food, and essential healthcare services. Dental care, in particular, is often viewed as a luxury rather than a necessity, leaving many to suffer from untreated oral health issues that can lead to severe pain, infections, and long-term complications. Recognizing these challenges, the mission team prioritized providing comprehensive care, including dental surgeries, medical treatments, and health education.
Despite the logistical hurdles of working in resource-limited settings, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability. They transformed local schools, community centers, and even open-air spaces into makeshift clinics, equipped with the essential tools and supplies they had brought with them. Each day, the team faced a high volume of patients—men, women, and children who had traveled hours, often on foot, to receive care.
Dr. John Won, known for his dedication to both his private practice and humanitarian efforts, has been actively involved in medical mission work for years. His commitment to global health initiatives aligns with his broader mission of using his expertise to serve both local and international communities.
