After a Launch Tournament in Maryland, Creators Head to Seattle on December 5 to Showcase at ASHA

BRENTWOOD, Md. – November 15, 2024 – Intelligent District has introduced Champions of Word Wrestling, a new, high-energy word card game designed to enhance literacy and language development in players of all ages. Following a lively launch tournament at Mixt Food Hall in Brentwood, Maryland, where early fans joined in on the competition, creators Daryl Jacob and Laura Pearl Hernandez are bringing the game to the national stage at the American Speech–Language–Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention in Seattle, Washington, from December 5-7. Champions of Word Wrestling is available on Amazon.

At the Brentwood event, participants went head-to-head in a thrilling battle of words, ultimately crowning Yazdan Ahmed of Gaithersburg, Maryland—competing as “Grammar Gladiator”—as the game’s first official champion. With families, wordsmiths, and literacy advocates eagerly embracing the game’s unique approach, Champions of Word Wrestling is sparking enthusiasm as a fresh, therapeutic alternative to traditional word games.

Created by Jacob, a pediatric anesthetist, and Hernandez, a speech-language pathologist, Champions of Word Wrestling fills a vital gap in educational and social gaming.  The game aims to help with the language, literacy, and social development needs of children, as well as the isolation fueled by technology and social media.

“We wanted to create something different— a unique gameplay experience that delivers a therapeutic-yet-exciting way to compete in linguistics,” said Jacob, who developed the idea at the height of the pandemic. “Many word games are dated or too complex for younger players.” Hernandez, who works in education, shared her linguistic expertise to develop gameplay that addresses different language processes. “Players must use their knowledge of speech sounds, reading, spelling and even vocabulary to create words on their turn. This game is a great tool to teach young learners, and even adults will enjoy playing with their families while keeping their minds sharp.”

Designed for 2-4 players ages 8 and up, Champions of Word Wrestling invites participants to craft winning words using letters, clusters, and wildcards. The game combines competition and learning, making it a perfect choice for family gatherings and classrooms.

Champions of Word Wrestling is the brainchild of Intelligent District founder Daryl Jacob, who practices at Children’s National Medical Center, and Laura Pearl Hernandez, owner of Family Partners Developmental Services LLC and a speech-language pathologist in D.C. Public Schools. Their collaboration aims to deliver a game that both educates and entertains, bridging gaps in language skills across generations.
