Gotham Books is proud to announce the release of “Stop the Tsunami,” the English-language version of Pádraig Standún’s Irish novel, originally published in Gaelic by Cló Iar-Chonnacht in An Spidéal, Ireland. Set on the mythical “Western Isle” off the coast of Ireland, “Stop the Tsunami” weaves together environmental themes, family dynamics, and the deep-rooted traditions of a threatened community in a timely and relevant story.
In “Stop the Tsunami,” a couple, Tom and Róisín, find themselves grappling with both the forces of nature and the pressures of modernity. With newfound wealth, rumored to be from a lotto win or labor abroad, they invest in environmental projects aimed at protecting their island from the looming threat of a tsunami. Tom, inspired by folk memories of a devastating wave that once swept away fifteen men, builds a wall on the clifftop to shield the island. Meanwhile, Róisín turns the island’s land into a flourishing source of fresh fruits and vegetables, determined to provide for the island’s future.
At its heart, the novel reflects on how a family navigates both the challenges of their environment and the complex relationships they share. Tom and Róisín’s two children live an idyllic life, close to their grandfather while dealing with their grandmother’s declining memory due to dementia, a poignant subplot about a forgotten religious relic that adds a touch of mystery to the narrative. All the while, the looming fear of a catastrophic tsunami threatens to shatter the islanders’ way of life as they grapple with questions of survival, faith, and the environment.
Set against the backdrop of the Atlantic’s wild beauty, “Stop the Tsunami” offers readers an immersive experience filled with wit, wisdom, and a compelling reflection on contemporary concerns like climate change and ecological preservation. The novel’s island community serves as a microcosm of today’s fire- and flood-ravaged world, inviting readers to explore the urgency of taking action to protect our fragile planet.
Stop the Tsunami is now available on Kindle an in paperback on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Readers of all backgrounds will find themselves drawn into this engaging, timely, and thought-provoking tale.
