October 24, 2024 – Forte Speech & Language Therapy is proud to announce the launch of its new transgender voice feminization service, designed to support individuals in their journey toward achieving a voice that aligns with their gender identity. This innovative service aims to provide tailored vocal training, empowering clients to express themselves authentically and confidently.
The decision to introduce transgender voice feminization comes in response to the growing need for specialized services within the LGBTQIA+ community. Many transgender women experience gender dysphoria in relation to their voice. This means their voice does not match their gender identity, leading to feelings of discomfort and anxiety. Research indicates that voice is a crucial aspect of personal identity, and for many, achieving a voice that reflects their true self can significantly enhance overall well-being.
The transgender voice feminization program will include service from Sophie Edwards, a transgender woman herself. Sophie brings her own lived experience, as well as training in the art of voice feminization. The clinic offers transgender voice feminization in Los Angeles via telehealth only.
The transgender voice feminization program includes an assessment of the client’s current vocal state, characteristics, and goals. From there, treatment will cover various aspects of voice feminization, including pitch, resonance, intonation, smoothness, and more.
Additionally, the program will address the emotional and psychological aspects of voice transition, providing clients with coping strategies and support throughout their journey. Sophie has been described as kind, patient, empathic, understanding, and, on more than one occasion, “life changing.”
“It’s humbling to be of service to my community like this,” says Sophie. “I know first hand how sharp the sting of dysphoria can be, and it brings me so much joy to be able to help relieve that in others.”
